Detroit Lions Draft Quarterback Brad Kaaya In Sixth Round
The Detroit Lions picked up a reserve quarterback in the sixth round of the NFL Draft on Saturday, drafting Miami quarterback Brad Kaaya.
The Detroit Lions drafted Miami quarterback Brad Kaaya with their second sixth-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft on Saturday.
Kaaya started for three seasons at Miami, beginning his freshman year, completing 60.8% of his passes for 9,968 yards, 69 touchdowns and 24 interceptions. He opted to enter the draft this year after his junior season instead of returning for his senior season.
Lance Zierlein of NFL.com compared Kaaya to current Cleveland Browns quarterback Cody Kessler and projected him as a third or fourth-round pick:
"Kaaya flashes the mechanics and intelligence of a player who has spent hours in quarterback camps. However, he can be too mechanical and thinks too much rather than just flowing and responding to what the field offers him. Kaaya could have used another year of college, but he has the tools and intangibles to become an NFL starter."
Kaaya has decent size, standing 6’4″ and weighing 214 pounds. Zeirlien says the Kaaya is a pocket passer who lacks arm strength and mobility but understands how to play the position and is mechanically sound.
Detroit Lions general manager Bob Quinn has made it clear that he wants to draft quarterbacks regularly. Currently, Kaaya would compete with second-year quarterback Jake Rudock, whom the Lions drafted in the sixth round of last year’s draft, for the backup position. If he does not become the backup, Kaaya might be placed on the practice squad as Rudock was last season. Current starter Matthew Stafford is entering the last year of his current contract.
Kaaya’s mother, Angela Means Kaaya, played the role of Felicia in the 1995 film, “Friday.”
