Detroit Tigers: James McCann hits the disabled list with hand laceration
By Matt Snyder
The Detroit Tigers placed catcher James McCann on the 10-day disabled list on Friday and called up John Hicks to take his place on the roster.
The Detroit Tigers made the decision to place starting catcher James McCann on the 10-day disabled after he was hit in the hand with a pitch on Thursday night. McCann was removed from the game and received stitches after the pitch opened up a cut on his left hand.
Anthony Fenech has the story and the following quote from manager Brad Ausmus today at the Detroit Free Press.
"“His hand was kind of pinched on the bottom of the bat,” manager Brad Ausmus said. “There was no damage other than it split his skin open and tissue underneath. It’s going to have to heal up before he can play.”"
According to Fenech, the Tigers are calling up John Hicks to take McCann’s spot on the roster. Hicks has appeared in seven games at the major league level and has hit .423/.444/.654 in 27 plate appearances. He’s spent most of the year in AAA where he’s hit .318/.322/.545 with five home runs in 91 plate appearances.
Expect Hicks to make an immediate start as the Tigers are scheduled to play a doubleheader tonight in Chicago. Hicks will likely start the first game against Mike Pelfrey and then again Saturday afternoon against left-hander Derek Holland. Alex Avila will likely be starting game two against Tyler Danish and then Sunday’s finale against righty Miguel Gonzalez.

It doesn’t sound like the Tigers expect McCann to be out longer than the 10 day minimum. It’s probably good news that the injury is to his non-throwing hand but it could still take a beating underneath his catcher’s mitt.
