Early Look at the Detroit Lions 2017 opponents: Atlanta Falcons
By Ash Thompson
Cornerback
The Falcons secondary played well across the board. Desmond Trufant missed seven games in 2016 with a torn pectoral, but the group was solid without him. The four corners that played more than 500 snaps all played above average ball according to Pro Football Focus. Jalen Collins and Robert Alford both picked off multiple passes in 2016.
The Lions will be hoping to get Eric Ebron matched up on the Falcons smaller interior corners. Poole and Alford played will in 2016, but are 5’10” or shorter. Kenny Golladay may have his first opportunity for a breakout game as well, using his size to his advantage. Size could be the greatest advantage in the lions week three contest.
Safeties
Keanu Neal had an excellent rookie season for the Falcons last year. He has the strong safety position locked down for a decade in Atlanta. Free Safety Ricardo Allen played will during the year, and elevated his play in the playoffs. He is an undersized player, but he’s tenacious and has missed only one game in two seasons.
Any injuries, however, will be catastrophic, as the rest of the Falcons safety group are terrible. Allen is another player in the Falcons secondary who struggles with size matchups. This could be Eric Ebron’s chance to have a great game.

Conclusion
The Lions will be in tough against the defending NFC champions. The Falcons are one of the League’s elite rosters. While there are examples of teams that lose the Superbowl failing in the following season, the Falcons do not appear likely to join them. This game will go a long way toward answering the questions we have about the Lions roster. If Bob Quinn’s roster moves have not successfully patched up the defense, the Lions week three game could be a long day.
