Depth chart prediction

With just three quarterbacks currently on the roster the only decision to be made is whether the Lions will carry two or three quarterbacks on the 53-man regular season roster. Many teams made a regular habit of carrying just two but it has been more recently that the Lions have done things that way. However, it is realistic to expect the Lions could reverse that trend and keep three heading into week one.

Bob Quinn’s comments indicate an expectation that Kaaya will be able to compete for the number two quarterback job right out of the gate.

"Thought it was a good value pick and he’s going to come in and compete with Jake and see how it goes."

We know the Lions like Rudock based on their action to promote him to the active roster last season, and we know the Lions view Kaaya as a better value than the sixth round pick they got him as. Both players give the Lions young developmental options, but it is unlikely the Lions will have enough information after training camp to make a good decision to choose one over the other for the future.

Prediction: Rudock’s one year head start on Kaaya helps him land the number two quarterback job but the Lions decide to keep Kaaya on the 53-man roster rather than waiving him and hoping they can sign him to the practice squad. Regular season depth chart: Stafford, Rudock, Kaaya
