Aron Baynes reaches agreement with Boston Celtics in free agency
By Zac Snyder
Aron Baynes didn’t strike it big on the free agent market after opting out of his deal with the Detroit Pistons, but he does land with a contender.
When Aron Baynes opted out of the final year of his contract with the Detroit Pistons, he likely did so thinking he could improve on the one year and $6.5 million due to him had he opted in. Ultimately, he didn’t find an improvement on either.
According to reports, Baynes will join the Boston Celtics on one year deal worth $4.3 million.
The money may not have been what Baynes was hoping for but he does get to move to a contender in the East after spending two seasons hanging on the fringe of a playoff spot with the Pistons.
The Pistons had prepared for Baynes’ departure a year ago by signing Boban Marjanovic to a deal averaging $7 million per season. For all intents and purposes, that closed the door on Baynes returning to the Pistons.
Marjanovic will take the place of Baynes as the backup center behind Andre Drummond while Eric Moreland was signed after performing well for the Pistons during Orlando Summer League play. Moreland is coming off a season in which he was an All-Star for the Canton Charge of the NBA D-League.

It might look like Baynes gambled and lost but the Celtics may offer a better opportunity to showcase himself as he enters free agency again next year.
