Two former Michigan State Spartans, Bryn Forbes and Matt Costello, are performing at a high level in this year’s NBA Summer League.

Two players familiar to Michigan State Spartans basketball fans have been garnering some attention in the NBA’s Summer League this year. Bryn Forbes of the San Antonio Spurs and Matt Costello of the Minnesota Timberwolves have both played very well for their respective teams and are making their cases for playing time this season.

Forbes averaged 26 points per game for the Spurs in five games in Las Vegas and 25 points per game over all eight games he played during the summer.

Dan Schultz of Pounding the Rock suggests that Forbes could see additional time this season with the Spurs’ lack of depth at guard, and Forbes’ Summer League performance will definitely help him see more of the floor.

Forbes played in 36 games for the Spurs last season after going undrafted in 2016, while also playing for their developmental team, the Austin Spurs. Forbes averaged 2.6 points in 7.9 minutes per game for San Antonio and averaged 15.8 points per 48 minutes.

Costello led the Las Vegas Summer League with 12 rebounds per game in 25.8 per game in four games for the Timberwolves. He averaged a double-double, scoring 11.3 points per game. He shot 60.7% from the floor and averaged 1.3 blocks per game.

Minnesota is Costello’s fourth NBA organization. He signed with the Atlanta Hawks after going undrafted in 2016. He played in six games for the Hawks during the 2016 Summer League before being released in October. After signing briefly with the Memphis Grizzlies, he played in three games for the Orlando Magic during the Orlando Summer League this season before landing in Minnesota.

Forbes played for two years at Michigan State after transferring from Cleveland State in 2014. He shot 48.1% from the floor and also 48.1% from beyond the arc during his season, averaging 14.4 points per game. Costello played for four years at Michigan State, averaging 10.7 points and 8.2 rebounds per game during his senior year in 2015-16.
