Detroit Red Wings: Andreas Athanasiou has KHL offer
By Mike Rizzo
News came out that Detroit Red Wing forward Andreas Athanasiou has an offer to go to the KHL. Athanasiou is currently a restricted free agent.
The Detroit Red Wings have one player left to sign. Andreas Athanasiou is a rising star but is a restricted free agent and the Red Wings need to sign him. The two sides have been negotiating since July but don’t appear to be close to a deal. Now the Red Wings have to worry about the KHL.
Craig Custance reported that Athanasiou is considering a one-year offer from the KHL. If Athanasiou accepts the offer, however, the Red Wings will still hold his NHL rights.
Now, I think this is just Athanasiou and his agent trying to get some leverage. But if the Red Wings lose Athanasiou, Ken Holland needs to be fired immediately. Many fans, myself included, think Holland should’ve been let go awhile ago but if this happens nobody will be able to defend him.
Ken Holland is a big reason this team is in bad shape with all the bad contracts he’s handed out. Because of those bad contracts, the Red Wings have very little cap space to sign Athanasiou.
With the Red Wings rebuilding, Athanasiou is a player the Red Wings must keep. He is becoming a fan favorite and the Red Wings can’t afford to lose him for nothing. Things are pretty gloomy with the Red Wings right now as they go into their brand new arena and if they lose Athanasiou things will be even worse.
Again, I don’t think Athanasiou is going anywhere but you never know. Training Camp is only a few weeks away which gives Holland plenty of time to figure out how to keep Athanasiou.

He made two good moves this offseason with his signing of Trevor Daley and re-signing Tomas Tatar. He needs to make an even better move now.
