September 9: vs. Western Michigan

Western Michigan is coming off its greatest season in school history, but will be without a lot of key pieces from their 2016 run in 2017. The team has a new coach, new offensive coordinator, new defensive coordinator, new quarterback, new receiving corps and new pass rush unit. That’s a lot of unproven pieces, especially going for a team that will be coming off a long road trip to Southern California and won’t have much football under its belt before traveling to East Lansing.

The Spartans won’t have things figured out by the time they meet the Broncos in week two, but West Michigan has almost as many unknowns and a smaller talent base.

The Broncos will be good in 2017. If this matchup were in November, it would likely be a completely different game. As it is, the Spartans will be more set for an early-season matchup, but not by much. Michigan State 27 – Western Michigan 20 (2-0)
