The Detroit Red Wings open up the 2017-18 season tonight against the Minnesota Wild. Tonight marks the first regular season game at Little Caesars Arena.

The Detroit Red Wings 2017-18 season officially starts tonight. The Red Wings finished the preseason with a record of 3-4-1.

The Red Wings are not expected to do well this season which wouldn’t be the worst thing. Whether Ken Holland wants to admit it or not the Red Wings are in the middle of a rebuild.

A top three to five pick in the 2018 NHL Draft would be a good thing for the Red Wings. The Red Wings finished with the ninth pick last season and selected Michael Rasmussen. He is probably a year or two away from making the Red Wings but he looked pretty good in the preseason.

A player that did make the Red Wings this season is Martin Frk. Frk is benefiting from Andreas Athanasiou remaining unsigned.

David Booth made the Red Wings also, he’s 33 years old and shockingly (sarcasm) got a spot over a younger player. It’s very frustrating to see Ken Holland sign these veteran players instead of giving younger players a shot.

One more frustrating thing about the Red Wings is Andreas Athanasiou. As mentioned above, Athanasiou and the Red Wings are locked in a contract dispute.

As of this writing, no traction has been made on the contract talks between both sides. He is one of the few players the Red Wings have that the fans get excited about. But Athanasiou also doesn’t have much leverage.

Dylan Larkin, Petr Mrazek and Gustav Nyquist struggled last season and I expect at least Dylan Larkin and Petr Mrazek to have rebound seasons.

Trevor Daley will also be a big boost for a defense that was below average last season. Daley, who signed a three year deal with the Red Wings in free agency, becomes their top defenseman in my opinion.

Tonight, the Minnesota Wild become the first team to play a regular season game at LCA. The Wild will be without Zach Parise tonight who is recovering from a back injury. Here is all the important information for tonight’s game:

98. Final. . 72.

This season most likely will be a tough one for Red Wings fans to watch. But if Mrazek has rebound season and turns things around maybe just maybe this team could be on the playoff bubble. My prediction is the Red Wings show a little improvement but miss the playoffs again and get a top five pick. Which again wouldn’t be a bad thing.
