The USMNT travel to the island nation of Trinidad & Tobago for their final match of CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying.

The USMNT must pass one final test tonight if they hope to directly qualify for the 2018 World Cup which will take place in Russia. The United States Men’s National Team sits in third place in the confederation standings, two points clear of Panama and Honduras. The top three teams at the end of this final qualifying round will earn berths to the World Cup while the fourth-place team must play a home-and-home playoff against the fifth-place team from Asia.

The United States must win tonight’s game to clinch a top-three position without help, but they’re likely to qualify if they can manage a draw. Things could get dicey if they lose. Here are the qualifying scenarios for the United States:

The United States will qualify directly tonight if:

  • They beat Trinidad & Tobago
  • They draw vs. Trinidad & Tobago AND Panama fail to beat Costa Rica by eight goals AND Honduras fail to beat Mexico by 13 goals.
  • They lose to Trinidad & Tobago AND Panama lose or draw AND Honduras lose or draw.

The United States will advance to an inter-confederation playoff vs. Asia’s fifth place team if:

  • They draw vs. Trinidad & Tobago AND Panama beat Costa Rica by eight goals or Honduras beat Mexico by 13 goals.
  • They lose to Trinidad & Tobago AND Panama or Honduras win.

The United States will be eliminated from the 2018 World Cup tonight if:

  • They draw vs. Trinidad & Tobago AND Panama beat Costa Rica by eight goals AND Honduras beat Mexico by 13 goals.
  • They lose to Trinidad & Tobago AND Panama win AND Honduras win.

It’s very unlikely that either Panama or Honduras could make up their goal differential deficits to the United States, so they’ll effectively clinch a World Cup spot with a win or a draw. A loss becomes problematic if either Panama or Honduras win tonight (against Costa Rica and Mexico respectively), and it becomes a downright disaster if both win.

Here’s all the information you’ll need to find tonight’s match on TV or streaming online.

Costa Rica and Mexico have both secured qualification so neither have much stake in the game. But if the United States fail to qualify because they couldn’t force a draw with Trinidad and Tobago, they have only themselves to blame.
