The United States men’s soccer team crashed out of World Cup qualifying on Tuesday night with a surprising 2-1 loss to Trinidad and Tobago.

You can make the argument that the USMNT was more or less robbed of their World Cup spot by Mexico inexplicably losing to Honduras or a Panama goal against Costa Rica that should not have counted, but was enough to give Panama the win and send off the US.

Or you could recognize that the United States has had this coming for years.

American soccer is bad. Like, wretched. Has been all along.

A nation that is one of the most populous, has a massive sports culture and has one of the highest GDPs per capita in the world should not miss the World Cup. How does it happen?

Let’s break it down.
