Detroit Lions awarded waiver claim for QB Brad Kaaya
By Zac Snyder
The Detroit Lions drafted Brad Kaaya in the sixth round of the 2017 NFL Draft but did not keep him out of training camp. However, Kaaya has returned.
Bob Quinn has added a quarterback in the sixth round in each of his first two drafts as general manager of the Detroit Lions. Like Jake Rudock last season, Brad Kaaya saw preseason action but did not make the active roster heading into the regular season.
Rudock immediately joined the team’s practice squad then was elevated to the 53-man roster when other teams came calling. Kaaya was claimed on waivers by the Carolina Panthers after the Lions chose not to use a roster spot to carry a third quarterback into the regular season. It turns out that was not the end of Kaaya in Detroit.
Kaaya was replaced on the Panthers roster this week when Garrett Gilbert was elevated from their practice squad. Waived by the Panthers, the Lions announced their were awarded the waiver claim, returning Kaaya to the team that drafted him.
It remains to be seen just how long Kaaya sticks considering it was less than two months ago that the Lions opted against carrying Kaaya on the active roster. That’s especially true considering the Lions are dealing with some injuries. It would seem that makes it even more difficult to carry an extra quarterback than it was prior to week one.
However, quarterback is one of the positions the Lions may feel they want to keep an extra body in the room considering how battered Matthew Stafford has been, particularly in the last three games. And being on the bye week means the Lions can get away with some imbalance on their roster since they don’t have to worry about putting together a gameday active list healthy enough to play at all positions.

Maybe that means this stint with the Lions lasts only a week, but it’s just as well to get him back in the building and perhaps look to keep him on the practice squad if they need to clear a 53-man roster spot heading into week eight.
