The announced changes to the Detroit Tigers’ on-field cap logo should be no big deal for fans of the club.

The Detroit Tigers announced a couple of uniform changes this week. The most notable one is the unification of the Olde English D between the home jersey and the cap (the cap version will now be on both). The second change is an increase in size to the logo on the team cap.

Georgoe Sipple tweeted out a picture of the old and new versions of the cap from Tigers Fest at Comerica Park.

My first reaction was that they overdid it a little bit. From the picture above it looks like the new logo size toes the line of being comically oversized, but this might not be the case. Sipple’s next tweet was a comparison between the Tigers cap logos and other iconic caps in the American League.

When compared to the Yankees and Red Sox, the Tigers new logo size doesn’t stand out very much. The old version is certainly smaller than both the of the old-time AL East rivals. Once the Tigers get the new caps on the field, the difference might be relatively imperceptible.

I’ll certainly agree with fans who would argue that the changes are unnecessary — the old version wasn’t much in need of fixing in the first place — but I can see a possible improvement in how the road caps looks.

Here’s Paul Lukas of UniWatch who articulates my thoughts on the matter exactly:

"I’ve always felt that the orange road “D” didn’t quite “pop” enough against the navy cap and that the logo looked a bit too small as a result."

I’ve never had any issue with the way the home cap looked in person or on TV, but I have had the feeling that the darker orange of the road version didn’t stand out quite as much. The larger size might help in this regard.

My guess is that we’ll all get used to the Tigers’ new caps in short order and that the old version will look like the strange one in a year’s time. In the end, if this logo is too large it’s only by a slight amount. Perhaps the right size is somewhere in between. It’s not a big deal either way.
