Detroit Tigers: Yes, baseball season is just around the corner
By Zac Snyder
Though another cold spell is about to set in over Michigan, Detroit’s boys of Summer are gearing up for action. Detroit Tigers baseball is nearly back.
As the calendar is set to turn from January to February, it very much remains winter in Michigan. However, there are signs of baseball coming, and that means signs of spring.
members of the Detroit Tigers clubhouse crew spent the time loading up for the trip South. According to MLive, the first truck left for Florida today after the clubhouse was stripped down to anything that isn’t fixed in place.
"The only things left in the Tigers clubhouse is the carpet and lockers. Everything else has been packed into cardboard boxes, wrapped in blankets, or put in plastic bins.In all, two semi trucks will make the 1,200 mile trip to Tiger Town. The first will leave January 31, while the other will leave a few days later."
The length of spring training means some comforts of home have to be sent along as well. Pitcher Alex Wilson posted a photo on Instagram of a loaded car carrier bound for Lakeland.
We’re now just a couple weeks away from the sights of green grass and baseball players on the field, at least on our televisions and computer screens. The Tigers will hold their first workout with pitchers and catchers on February 14 with the first full-team workout four days later.
The fake games start for real on February 22 when the Tigers play their annual exhibition opener against Florida Southern. Grapefruit League play begins on the 23rd with the Tigers on the road against the New York Yankees. The Tigers’ first spring training home game will be on the 24th.
