Detroit Pistons: What the new guys will bring to the team
By Jack Ozark
Blake Griffin
Griffin is the star of the show. This trade happened just because of him. And even though some may believe that the Pistons gave up a lot, I don’t think it was a horrible trade. Griffin brings in a superstar level of play, and should be able to work well as he will have a similar setup to what he had with the Clippers.
Drummond is a better version of DeAndre Jordan at the moment. Drummond’s ability to actually do something offensively with the ball in his hands should do wonders for Griffin as he cuts to the hoop. I mean, Reggie Bullock has been playing out of his mind by cutting to the basket.
Griffin can also work as a safety net when things are getting out of hand. I feel confident in him having the ball and slowing things down if the opposing team is on a run. This will also come in handy in the playoffs. (Yes, I am saying that the Pistons make the playoffs now.)
Griffin is what the Pistons wanted when they signed Josh Smith all those years ago. (The fact that his contract is still on the books kills me a little bit inside.) I know it probably burns your eyes to read that name, but hear me out. When the Pistons signed Smith a lot of that money came in because he was looked at as a budding star. The Pistons were ready to get a leader for years to come. That reality never happened though.
Griffin on the other hand, gets to come to the Pistons and become not only a leader, but a mentor. And personally, I think that is going to be great for him. He’s going to both be one of the major leaders on the team, and the guy that gets to push the team toward growth. It was never fair to shove Drummond into that position. Maybe he can do it someday but not yet. A star like Griffin, with a handful of playoff series under his belt, now that’s the guy everybody will listen to.
