The prediction

With Graham Glasgow ready to step in as the starting center and Travis Swanson’s uneven play and injury history, I do not believe Swanson will be back with the Lions for the 2018 season.

Having Glasgow in place is nice to replace Swanson, but he also gives the Lions maximum flexibility to fill the roster void more generally. All interior lineman options remain on the table as they could add a center in free agency or the draft and keep Glasgow at guard, or they could move Glasgow to center and use the offseason to fill the resulting hole at guard.

With some cap dollars to spend, Quinn will likely be looking for more impact than he’d get by brining Swanson back. If there is one pattern Quinn has shown in his two years in charge it is that he values the offensive line. Taylor Decker and Glasgow were two of his first three draft picks and he made major investments in free agency last offseason by signing T.J. Lang and Rick Wagner.

Re-signing Swanson feels inconsistent with the actions he’s shown so far. Four of the five starting offensive lineman are already Quinn picks or signings. Expect that to be five of five in 2018.
