The prediction

I predict the Lions will re-sign Whitehead. It may not be exactly the deal he’s hoping for as free agency approaches but he should be able to see a slightly better deal than the one that is expiring.

After apparently not finding a deal to draw him away from the Lions two years ago, it’s hard to predict that such an offer will be waiting for him this time around.

Letting Whitehead walk in free agency would mean placing a lot of faith in things the Lions hope will happen. Of course the Lions will hope for a second-year bounce from Davis. The Lions will hope for Reeves-Maybin to grow into a more regular role on defense. They may even hope to add more linebacker depth and talent through free agency and/or the draft.

There isn’t anything wrong with hoping for anything, especially for the things mentioned above. Even better is to hope for those things while having a more certainty on the table by keeping Whitehead in Detroit.
