It has been a busy and successful week for the Wayne State athletic department. Multiple athletes took home awards, and team’ reached new all-time performance highs.
The Women’s track team had an unprecedented level of success at the GLIAC Championships on Sunday. Their fifth place performance fell short of their stated goal, which was third overall but was none the less impressive. Karrington Seals won her second consecutive 60m hurdle GLIAC title. Shanice Leach won the triple jump event.
The team scored 68 points, which missed its goal by a mere 10. They were ahead of fifth place Saginaw Valley State by 32.
Also earning All-Region honors from the USTFCCCA were Kierra Johnson in the 60m, and Jessie Kluz in the high jump. Seals’ 8.53s 60m hurdle time ranks seventh overall and Johnson’s 7.60 60m sprint ranks twenty-second in Division II.
The Wayne State Warriors took fifth place at the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships on Sunday. Three Warriors received All-MFC honors: Ziad Eisissy earned first team, Henry Kisthardt second team, and Brendan Johnson honorable mention. All three will represent Wayne State at the NCAA regional tournament March 10 in Cleveland Ohio.
The Warriors baseball team opened their season at the RussMatt Invitational with a three-game series against Kentucky Wesleyan that concluded Monday. They won one game and fell just short of a comeback in another. The team went 2-0 in a Tuesday doubleheader vs. Gannon giving them a record of 3-2 on the season. First baseman J.T. Conti was named GLIAC player of the week after going 6-8 with five RBI and a double. He had a slugging percentage of .850. This is the second time in Conti’s career that he has earned the award.
Later this week
The Women’s tennis team square off on Feb 28 vs Lawrence Tech at 33:00 PM. The Mens and Women’s basketball teams also do battle in the GLIAC quarterfinals. The Women’s team face Northwood at 5:30 PM. The Men’s team take on Michigan Tech at 7:30 PM. both games are at the Matthaei Center, and student attendance is encouraged.
