Today’s workouts may not be as relevant as yesterday’s for the Detroit Lions but there may end up being intrigue in retrospect once we get through the draft. Bob Quinn has drafted a quarterback in each of his first two drafts as general manager and is on record as believing it makes good business sense to regularly draft quarterbacks.

Despite selecting Jake Rudock and Brad Kaaya in successive drafts, the Lions’ shouldn’t feel secure about their backup quarterback situation. Could that lead to a third quarterback drafted in as many years?

The Lions feel relatively set at wide receiver with Golden Tate as consistent as ever, Marvin Jones emerging as a big time downfield threat in the Lions offense and Kenny Golladay flashing moments of brilliance as a rookie. T.J. Jones reportedly won’t be tendered as a restricted free agent but shouldn’t be ruled out to return as a fourth option.

Tight end could be a different story, however. Eric Ebron will be back on his fifth-year option but there haven’t been signals from Quinn that Ebron is in the plans longer-term than that. With 2017 draft pick Michael Roberts entering his second year, the Lions could be set for 2018 if they bring back Darren Fells or feel comfortable turning to Hakeem Valles after the year he spent on the practice squad.

But if Fells isn’t retained, the Lions don’t want to hand a spot to Valles and they intend on letting Ebron hit free agency next year, looking at a tight end in this draft could be in order.
