The Michigan basketball program has made a second title game appearance in the last six years, hoping this time to bring home a national championship.

The road ends here. Michigan basketball’s run through the 2018 NCAA Tournament has largely fit the “survive and advance” theme, save for a dominating performance against Texas A&M in the Sweet 16. Tonight, there is no advancing – it’s just about winning and losing.

With a win tonight, the Michigan Wolverines will add a banner to hang with the one that commemorates the team’s 1989 National Championship. With a loss, Michigan joins the other 66 tournament participants who have already seen their run end without a title.

For the first time this tournament, Michigan will be an underdog as the Villanova Wildcats are certainly the most formidable opponent they’ve faced yet. While any Final Four appearance represents a significant achievement, Michigan has benefited from a favorable path in which they haven’t faced any team seeded better than sixth – and that was way back in the second round.

Finishing off the tournament with a championship means defeating Villanova. Do that and no one will be talking about an easy path. The Wildcats have been a serious national championship contender all season long and defeating them in the title game validates everything Michigan has done over the last few weeks.

The Wolverines were a four seed in the 2013 title game against top-seed Louisville but came up short. Can they knock of a one seed as a three seed this time around? We’ll find out soon enough.
