NFL Draft 2018: Detroit Lions seven-round mock draft 3.0
By Zac Snyder
Round 7
And now we finally get back to the offensive side of the ball. The long-term plan at tight end has been up in the air for a while, even before Eric Ebron‘s release. The Lions never appeared keen on keeping Ebron long-term, even if he had stayed on the fifth-year option, and 2017 draft pick Michael Roberts is the only tight end Bob Quinn has added with a long-term view in mind.
Quinn hastened the need to fill the hole left by Ebron by releasing him and didn’t replace him with a long-term contract in free agency. Luke Willson and Levine Toilolo have been added to the roster, but both are on one-year deals.
Unless the Lions are really, really high on Hakeem Valles, who spent last season on the practice squad, the Lions should be looking for a tight end somewhere int he 2018 NFL Draft. The position was on my radar throughout but I chose to fill other needs ahead of tight end, leaving me to take the highest-rated tight end left on the Drafttek board.
Schultz turns out to be much more than a consolation prize. Many seventh-round picks are little more than lottery tickets or players a team doesn’t want to risk missing out on as an undrafted free agent. Not so with Schultz who is combo tight end prospect who could contribute early and give the Lions someone in place for more than just this season.
Next: A running back for the Lions to consider in every round
