Detroit Tigers go for the sweep against the Baltimore Orioles
By Travis Gibbs
The Detroit Tigers are looking for their seventh win of the season today against the Baltimore Orioles. They’ve taken the first two games of the series.
Despite the terrible weather conditions, the Detroit Tigers have taken the first two games of their home series against the Baltimore Orioles. This is in response to getting swept in four games by the Cleveland Indians and dropping a home game to the New York Yankees.
Francisco Liriano was fantastic again in the first game of the series with the Orioles. He struck out seven batters and gave up only two runs in his start. Victor Martinez hit his first home run of the season. Jeimer Candelario tripled in the eighth inning to give the Tigers a little bit of cushion. Shane Greene shut the door to secure a 4-2 win against Baltimore.
Matt Boyd followed up Liriano’s performance with another gem. He went six strong innings while only giving up two hits and one run. Boyd struck out six batters as well.
Miguel Cabrera homered in the game which also happened to be his 35th birthday. John Hicks homered in the game as well. Dixon Machado stole the show on Cabrera’s birthday. He hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to secure the Tigers’ sixth win of the season.
First pitch for today’s game is at 1:10 p.m. Jordan Zimmermann will toe the rubber for the Tigers. Zimmermann took a ball to the face that forced him to leave the game the last time he was on the mound in Cleveland.
He hasn’t been good in his last few starts after showing some promise on opening day. He has an 8.18 ERA and has yet to get a win this season. If the Tigers are going to have any shot at success this season, they need Zimmermann to pitch well.
Right-hander Alex Cobb will take the mound for the Baltimore Orioles.
It would be great to see the Tigers finish this series the right way. They have Kansas City coming to town for four games after today. The Royals are struggling this season. They are 3-13 this season and have lost their last eight games.
