Matt Patricia says the Lions will use their throwback uniforms at least once in 2018.

The Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia met with the media Wednesday morning and let a little information slip. It is not some key aspect of the scheme or information about where the team’s first-round pick will line up on game days. Patricia let a little bit of information slip about uniforms.

Nobody asked him whether the Lions were going to use their throwback uniforms in 2018, but there it was. When asked what should be read into the fact that the team has been practicing without decals on their helmets, Patricia’s reply held the nugget of information. After reminding the assembled beat reporters that nothing happening in the spring really matters he said “I mean, the throwback uniform is great. That’s another good look for us, so we’ll have that one time this year.”

The throwback uniform has always been one of my favorites. I think the silver helmet, blue jersey with silver numbers, and silver pants with blue socks look has a classic feel to it. It’s the same thing as a black suit to me. It’s the one you pull out for special occasions, not just a regular night out.

The Lions have a tendency to pull these uniforms out on Thanksgiving. This year that means a matchup with the Chicago Bears. The first game between the Lions, then the Portsmouth Spartans, and the Bears occurred on Nov 30, 1930. Since then it has been one of football’s premier rivalries.

The Thanksgiving game would be one of the better choices on the schedule for the throwback jerseys. Other likely games would include The October 7th game against the Packers or the December 23 game against the Vikings. All we are sure of at this point is that the uniforms will make an appearance. A throwaway comment in the head coach’s presser has never turned out to be untrue before, has it?
