All-Star announcement, Nascar Cup victory, Spectacular defense, the bats come alive, and Summer League basketball kicks off.

Friday night Jordan Zimmerman put together his second consecutive start with at least five scoreless innings. He is off the disabled list and playing very well. Evan Woodbery of Mlive.com points to his early season strikeout to walk ratio as an indication that we may be seeing a legitimate revival in the 32-year-old’s career. The Tigers won the game 3-1.

Saturday, the Tigers got up by seven runs in the first inning. Ther cruised to a 7-2 win. The highlight of the night was a spectacular catch by JaCoby Jones that robbed Adrian Beltre of a home run in the sixth inning.

Sunday’s Tigers/Texans recap

Joe Jimenez made the All-Star team. Nicholas Castellanos did not.

Eric Jones, a native of Byron Michigan won his first Nascar cup race. Jones was the 2017 rookie of the year in the Cup series and finished 19th in points. Jones has now qualified for the playoffs.

The Red Wings signed Filip Zadina to his rookie contract.  The deal has a $925,000 salary cap hit before bonuses. A player like Zadina who will likely produce points even while he learns the game will likely cost much more than that after those bonuses kick in. There is controversy regarding Zadina’s status. His junior hockey team, the Halifax Mooseheads, are trying to ensure that is Zadina is not in Detroit for the 2018-19 season, he returns to them. The NHL has ruled that Zadina is AHL eligible. It only matters if Zadina doesn’t make the NHL roster. He very likely will.

The Pistons dropped two summer league games over the weekend. The first was an embarrassing 90-63 drubbing at the hands of the Milwaukee Bucks. The second was a tighter 73-70 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies. It’s hard to pull a standout performance out of a game that the team lost by 27, so I’ll focus on the Saturday game. Khyri Thomas scored 13 pts and was 3-5 from three-point range. He also had seven rebounds. That’s a nice game for a guy taking his first steps into professional basketball. Bruce Brown jr. has signed his rookie contract, and will likely join the Pistons for their game today against the New Orleans Pelicans.

It was a good weekend for Detroit sports. The Tigers, Red Wings, and Pistons showed signs of hope for the future. Young Athletes both from, and new to Michigan, had good weekends.
