The Detroit Lions made no picks in the NFL Supplemental Draft on Wednesday, although Western Michigan cornerback Sam Beal was picked by the New York Giants.

Western Michigan Broncos cornerback Sam Beal was taken by the New York Giants in the third round of the NFL Supplemental Draft on Wednesday. The Detroit Lions passed on all five players entered into the draft, making it 36 years since their last supplemental draft selection.

The only other selectee, Virginia Tech cornerback Adonis Alexander was picked by Washington in the sixth.

The three other entrants, Mississippi State cornerback Brandon Bryant, Grand Valley State running back Martayveus Carter and Oregon State linebacker Ugwoegbu went undrafted, although Bryant signed with the New York Jets after the draft.

Beal would have been academically ineligible to play for Western Michigan this year, which is why he signed up for the supplemental draft. The Giants gave up a third-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft to select Beal.

The most prolific supplemental picks in recent years have been Josh Gordon by the Cleveland Browns in 2012 and Terrelle Pryor by the Oakland Raiders in 2011. No one has been drafted in the first round of the supplemental draft since Dave Brown of the New York Giants in 1992. Cris Carter, a 1987 pick, is the only supplemental draftee in the Hall of Fame.

The Lions have only made one selection in NFL Supplemental Draft history, claiming cornerback Kevin Robinson with a ninth-round pick in 1982.
