The Detroit Tigers do not have any spectacular trade assets going into the trade deadline. They do, however have a few lower end assets that will draw interest.

Make no mistake, the Detroit Tigers are sellers at the trade deadline. The problem is that they do not really have any spectacular pieces to sell. There are players on the team who have drawn interest from other teams, however. Unfortunately there is no massive haul of prospects and draft picks coming back to Detroit at the trade deadline for any of these players.

Starting pitchers will always be commodities at the deadline. The two things teams are looking to add at all times are arms and bats. The Tigers have none of the latter that they would have any interest in moving. They do have some interesting pitchers that could entice teams into sending something back.

Mike Fiers

The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees are among the teams poking around the ballpark for Tigers assets. Sox lefty Eduardo Rodriguez is on the DL, and they need to plug that hole going into the stretch run. The Yankees starting pitching has been imperfect outside their top two. Mike Fiers would give them a solid arm to ad to the mix.

He is enjoying a career year, and has one year of team control remaining. The team could hold on to him, but his value next year would be lower. This rebuild will not be done before Fiers moves on. Keeping him around is far from ideal.

Shane Greene

Shane Greene was garnering more interest before he hit the ten day DL with a possible aneurysm in his shoulder. Despite a negative MRI, that may have limited the team’s options in moving him. Teams never like acquiring risk at the deadline. He will certainly not be brought in for a closer role.

His numbers have been decent, but not great for the Tigers. He is 16 for 19 on save opportunities but his lack of experience in a relievers role will likely scare teams away from utilizing him that way. He is a player that could find a setup man role with a contender.

Francisco Liriano

Back issues may prevent the Tigers from moving Francisco Liriano. He is throwing off a mound without discomfort. Multiple consecutive starts appear to have been derailed by this problem, however. His timing could not be worse for the Tigers.

At the very least, Liriano’s back issue will limit the return that the team sees. Greene is also injured at exactly the wrong time. Fiers is maximizing his value with a solid year. The Tigers pitching staff could look very different very soon.
