With the free agent signings and the expected improved play from last year’s linebackers, Jonathan Freeny gets overlooked. Devon Kennard was the Lions’ high priced free agent this year. Christian Jones was also brought in as a free agent from the Chicago Bears.

The hype of Jarrad Davis making a big sophomore leap with Patricia now as the head coach is incredible. Additionally, Jalen Reeves-Maybin will be competing with Jones for the starting gig. Freeny, on the other hand, kind of gets lost in the mix.

The Lions brought in Freeny as a free agent to shore up a weak linebacker corps. He played for Coach Patricia back in New England. He is familiar with what Patricia is looking to do on defense. Freeny has the versatility to play any linebacker spot and has some pass rushing ability. With all those tools, he is an intriguing player within the Lions defense.

Freeny possesses not only defensive versatility, but a strong special teams contribution. For the first part of his career, that’s where he made his living. As we all know, general manager Bob Quinn loves players who can contribute in more ways than one, especially on special teams.

The depth he provides, along with his scheme familiarity, versatility, and special teams value make Freeny a key piece for the Lions. As a journeyman free agent, this spells success for Freeny. Sticking with the team and make a name for himself could be the end result.
