Kenny Wiggins

With how much focus that has gone into the offensive line, Kenny Wiggins has flown under the radar. The focus has been on the health of Taylor Decker, T.J Lang, and Rick Wagner. Then, Graham Glasgow‘s transition from guard to center. Most of all is first-round pick Frank Ragnow and what he will be able to contribute to the team.

Wiggins started all 16 games last year for the San Diego Chargers. He was a cog in an offensive line that only gave up only 18 sacks and enabled Melvin Gordon to surpass 1,000 yards. The most intriguing part is Wiggins has played under Lions new offensive line coach Jeff Davidson before. Under Davidson, Wiggins went on to have his best season in his career. Wiggins will know what Davidson is looking for giving him a leg up in the new scheme.

Wiggins has the best chance at sticking on the team because of the lack of guard depth for the team. Because of scheme familiarity and veteran presence, he could be the Lions’ primary guard backup.

He will not be starting with the offensive line shored up, but Wiggins is a great depth piece to have. We all know how catastrophic the offensive line was last year when injuries decimated it. Having someone like Wiggins is a good insurance policy. With his veteran skills and familiarity with Davidson’s scheme; he should be able to carve out a reserve role.
