Like Shead, Charles Washington is being overlooked because of the bigger names among the secondary.Washington was an undrafted free agent in 2016 and spent time on the practice squad. Last year, he earned a spot on the roster backing up Glover Quin. He went on to record 14 total tackles in spot duty.
He will have to compete with third-round pick Tracy Walker though if he wants to keep a spot on the roster. Walker is being groomed as Glover Quin’s replacement after he retires and there might not be room for Washington. With the expected use of the secondary this year though, Washington could find his way back on the roster for depth purposes.
Where Washington will earn his keep is his special teams value. Washington had anywhere been 50% to 70% of the special teams snaps for the Lions last season. He does have an uphill battle with the new players and scheme . As long as he has a good camp, he can earn a spot on special teams and provide depth in the expected heavy used secondary if needed.

Surprisingly the majority of these players were free agents brought over this year. The reason they were brought over is that they provide the right depth where the team wouldn’t miss a beat ifa starter went down. Also, some the coaches are familiar with them. They know what these players bring to the table. These guys will not grab the headlines or provide the spectacular plays. What they will do is their job and do it well. Keep your eyes on these guys because they just might surprise a few of you.
