The Veteran backups

Wesley Johnson was ranked as the worst starting center in the NFL by the B/R NFL 1000. He was never intended to set foot on the field, merely to provide a veteran backup option in case some of the Lions prospects did not develop.

Johnson looked acceptable, against the Raiders. He was a clear step down from Glasgow, but he held his own against the Raiders reserves. His starting experience in the league could outweigh Ragnow’s much more impressive physical abilities.

His dead feet limit Johnson’s potential as a blocker, but if he can get the rest of the line in position better than the rookie, it can be worked around.

Leo Koloamatangi joined the Lions in 2017 and has not played a game for the team. He had a long way to go in terms of technique coming out of Hawaii. He has taken a massive leap between the 2017 and 2018 preseasons.

He has historically been a people mover, but lacks experience at the NFL level. Koloamatangi would be a huge question mark in the middle of the starting offensive line.

Both Johnson and Koloamatangi logged significant snaps against the Raiders. They are the only options that Lione have other than trying to change Ragnow’s position on the fly before his rookie season.
