The Detroit Pistons hired a numbers guy as their assistant GM. Sachin Gupta is a good hire for the position, and he has an interesting resume.

The Detroit Pistons have hired Sachin Gupta as their assistant general manager. Contract terms were not disclosed

“We are pleased to welcome Sachin Gupta to the Detroit Pistons organization,” said Ed Stefanski, who is serving as a special advisor to team owner, Tom Gores.  “Sachin is a creative thinker, extremely intelligent, and has a great handle on the analytical side of basketball operations systems.”

“His analytics and salary cap background will be a tremendous resource while serving a leadership role for our basketball operations team.”

Have you ever used the NBA trade machine on EPSN.com? Well Gupta was a software engineer for ESPN from 2004-2006. He was part of the team that put that nifty little thing together in the first place.

More recently Gupta served as an advisor to Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey. He had previously spent time in Houston setting up their analytics department in 2006 after leaving ESPN. He also helped out managing the team’s salary cap until he left in 2013.

Gupta joined the 76ers organization as a consultant prior to the draft. In 2014 he became Vice President of Basketball Operations. He has been the second in command as the team rose to the level of a playoff team in 2017-18.

This move is a sign that the Pistons are moving in a forward-thinking direction. Gupta is among the most well regarded “analytics guys” in the NBA. Stan Van Gundy was regarded as an analytics guy when he was hired, so that is not a new thing for the team.

A knee-jerk reaction to Van Gundy’s failures would have been to bring in a bunch of eye-test based basketball guys. Pistons fans can rest assured that has not happened here.
