Michigan State football’s Brian Lewerke is starting to get some buzz as an NFL prospect. The Spartans may need a replacement one year early.

Brian Lewerke is making all kinds of preseason lists. Earlier in the preseason, he showed up in numerous Heisman trophy candidate watch lists. Now he is making lists that could be even more life-changing than that if they play out.

Lewerke is ranked as the number one quarterback prospect according to thedraftnetwork.com. At six feet, two inches, and 212 pounds, he has more than enough size to make the jump. The rocket-armed passer could be in for a significant paycheck in 2019.

Brian Lewerke has the natural arm needed to be a big play passer,” writes Kyle Crabbs, formerly of NDT scouting, and now heavily involved in the new draft focused site. He calls Lewerke a dual-threat quarterback, praises the QB’s toughness and says that Lewerke teased a gifted mind in addition to his physical attributes last season.

MSU hosts both Michigan and Ohio State this season. Lewerke’s toughest tests are under favorable conditions. Crabbs does list the poor performances against those teams in 2018 as a negative. He admits that no quarterback could be successful in the Michigan game. The weather made throwing the football a virtual impossibility.

Lewerke does have the potential to put up a massive season. All of his major receiving targets are returning. L.J. Scott, Connor Heyward and Weston Bridges should be able to provide a dangerous rushing attack to keep teams honest.

The Michigan State QB is only the number 24 overall prospect on the site’s big board, but they have him ahead of more established talents like NC State’s Ryan Finley and Missouri’s Drew Lock.

The reason this is particularly exciting for Michigan State Football fans is that these were some of the few prognosticators who were high on Baker Mayfield as a prospect before the 2017 season. That turned out pretty well for Oklahoma fans.

Michigan State Football has not been getting the same level of respect as Big Ten rivals Michigan and Ohio State during the run-up to this season. A pro-ready quarterback like Lewerke can cover up a lot of other roster deficiencies.
