Detroit Lions: Let’s meet the best starting D-Line in the NFC North
By Bob Heyrman
He was mentioned as the top free agent target by many heading into the offseason. The Detroit Lions landed Trey Flowers who spent time with Matt Patricia as a member of the New England Patriots.
Trey Flowers being added to an already stout, NFL’s top-ten defense isn’t just a solid signing it’s incredible. The bonus is he is already familiar with the style of defense, the terminology, the stunts, and twists. Flowers will be the second most valuable player on this line next to Harrison. The pair will work together to dominate the opposing teams’ O-line.

This Lions’ D-line should keep their opponents up at night knowing they could be potentially dominated on Sundays. Flowers isn’t a guy who will achieve 15 sacks or anything. He’s not a speed rusher like Von Miller or Khalil Mack he’s another guy who is incredible against the run, he sets the edge, taking on blockers allowing the linebackers to be freed up to make a tackle. He can create a massive push from the edge into the backfield disrupting the timing of plays and making run stops in the backfield.
Expect around 7 sacks from Flowers this year, but he will command a double team at times leaving the opposite DE on the team one on one. I expect Hand to also double his sack total of 3 last year because of Flowers’ dominance on the opposite side. Last season Flowers recorded 7.5 sacks to go along with 57 total tackles. He forced 3 fumbles and hit the quarterback 20 times.
The New England Patriots drafted Trey 101st overall in the fourth round of the 2015 NFL Draft. Flowers also signifies that the Detroit Lions can attract some of the leagues’ top free agents. Players often chase money or fame; others have a desire to win.
Flowers has a super bowl on his resume, he definitely joined the Lions because the money worked, but he also decided to come to Detroit because of his head coach, things are turning around in Detroit. We should be very excited for this up and coming season.
