Detroit Pistons: 2019 NBA Draft, Time, TV Schedule, Draft Order

The Detroit Pistons own the 15th & 30th picks in the first round along with the 45th overall pick that will occur in the second round. The team is up against the cap for one more season, so it’s crucial they make both of these picks count.

You never want to swing and miss, but it’s imperative that Detroit Pistons‘ interim general manager Ed Stefanski, team scouts along with some input from head coach Dwane Casey draft a few players that can help the organization right away. The Detroit Pistons added the 30th pick last night when they dealt Jon Leuer to the Bucks in exchange for Tony Snell and the pick. People would have been fine with Leuer for Snell straight up so it was a nice job landing the additional pick.

It seems like just yesterday the Toronto Raptors won the NBA Championship. It must have been a bit bittersweet for Casey who won coach of the year, a year ago with the Raptors–then to see them get the job done beating the daunting Golden State Warriors in a six-game series. A week later here we are, draft day 2019.

Being a Detroit Pistons fan, the hope is Stefanski can provide the pieces necessary to mirror what the Raptors and what has worked for Casey’s coaching style in the past. I’m not sure what he’s feeling at the moment, but I have to think he was watching wishing he had Kawhi Leonard during his time in Toronto. Not taking anything away from rookie head coach Nick Nurse, he did a fantastic job, but I feel the results would have been the same if Casey remained at the helm with that roster at his disposal.

Not only did the Raptors land Leonard but added essential pieces such as veterans Marc Gasol and Danny Green. The team received a remarkable run from guard Fred VanVleet a backup that looks to be a starter moving forward along with forward Pascal Siakam. Hopefully, in a couple of years, the Detroit Pistons are in a position to add veteran pieces to make a run themselves.

Last season the Detroit Pistons forfeited their first-round pick to the L.A Clippers in the Blake Griffin deal. With the 12th pick in the draft where the Pistons would have picked, the Clippers selected Miles Bridges from the Michigan State Spartans who they immediately dealt to the Hornets. The Detroit Pistons selected Bruce Brown with their only pick in the draft with the 42nd overall pick last season.

The hope for the Pistons is that management can land three players that have the potential to turn into impact players in the near future. After this season the Detroit Pistons have 44-million dollars coming off of the books, and if Andre Drummond happened to opt out of his deal, the team would have more than 70-million to spend. The rebuild will take a bit of patience, but it continues tonight with a strong draft.

The first overall pick in last year’s draft was center DeAndre Ayton by the Phoenix Suns. He averaged 16.3 points per game while snatching 10.3 boards a game. This year, the explosive, endless entertaining Zion Williamson will be the first overall pick by the New Orleans Pelicans.
