After shocking plenty of people by selecting Moritz Seider at sixth overall, the Detroit Red Wings came back and added ten more players to their draft class with ten selections on day two.

All in all, the Detroit Red Wings made three selections in the second round, one in the third, fourth, and fifth rounds. After that, they made two selections in both the sixth and seventh rounds for ten total players selected on day two. In all, eleven players make up the Red Wings 2019 NHL draft class. The draft class is composed of five total defensemen, five forwards, and one goalie to round it out.

Antti Tuomisto- Defenseman

The second round kicked off day two when the Red Wings selected Antti Tuomisto with the thirty-fifth overall selection. Tuomisto is an eighteen-year-old Finnish defenseman who is a big mobile guy like Moritz Seider. Like Seider, Tuomisto stands six-foot-four, weighing in at 194-pounds. He comes from the Assat U20 team in the Finnish league Jr. A SM-Liiga where he tallied thirty-five points through forty-five games.

The positives and intrigue of Tuomisto’s play is his ability to shoot from the point. He also has a good set of hands to accompany his shooting ability, which should be great for the Red Wings. The size element of Tuomisto allows him to stay strong on the puck and play solid defense. The hope behind him is that he can be that offensive big mobile right-handed shooting defenseman for the Red Wings franchise.

Robert Mastrosimone- Forward

After Tuomisto, the Red Wings had another selection to make at fifty-fourth overall in the second round where they selected forward Robert Mastrosimone. Mastrosimone is a center and left winger who stands five-foot-ten, 170-pounds coming from the Chicago Steel of the USHL. Scoring thirty-one goals and tallying sixty points through fifty-four games was the winger out of the USHL.

Mastrosimone is the type of player who is going to be a reckless force in the offensive and defensive zone. Scouting reports from Elite Prospects rave about his ability to use his hands to get around players and then use his quick-release wrist shot to be effective. Look for Mastrosimone to be the type of forward who can get dirty down low but also capitalize on his shooting ability when carrying the puck into the offensive zone.

Albert Johansson- Defenseman

To cap off the second round of the Red Wings draft board, the Red Wings selected defenseman Albert Johansson at sixtieth overall at the end of the second round. Standing six-foot, 168-pounds the left-handed shooting defenseman hails from Farjestad BK of the Swedish league. This past season, Johansson netted twenty-nine points through forty games.

Looking further into Johansson, the probable reason for his selection would gear towards his strong hockey IQ and great strides which help his plus-skating. Johansson uses his skating ability to gain separation at the top of the zone with quick first steps. With this separation, he is not afraid to shoot the puck and can send a quality shot on net, which shows plenty of positives for the future of the Red Wings franchise.
