Derick Brassard was the sixth overall pick of the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2006 NHL Entry Level Draft. The veteran center in recent years has been moved heavily around the trade deadline.
Two years ago he spent time between both the Ottawa Senators and the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Pens acquired the veteran center to be their third line center behind two perennial All-Stars and future Hall of Famers Sidney Crosby & Evgeni Malkin.

Last season Brassard didn’t bother buying a new home, it certainly would have been wise to rent or bunk with a teammate because he moved a lot. He started the season with the Penguins, then was shipped to Florida for a ten game stint before finishing the year with the Colorado Avalanche.
He combined for 14 goals, 9 assists, 23 points. Derick averaged 15:00 TOI per game, which was about a minute and a half less than his career average. Brassard’s best days are behind him but the constant travel between team to team last year could have led to a down year. Every time he would have leaned in to take a draw, he was playing with a different set of wingers with a different teams’ crest on his chest.
Two seasons ago he recorded 21 goals, so there could be something left in tank. He’d be an upgrade to Darren Helm who is projected to be a third line winger once again with the Detroit Red Wings for the upcoming season.
Steve Yzerman could also attempt to move Brassard at the trade deadline for some mid-level draft choices. The Wings will continue to rebuild, so moving players for picks is always a good thing, especially if they don’t work into the future plans of the organization. Brassard would be an excellent replacement for Luke Glendening if Yzerman decides to move the sought after centerman.
