Detroit Tigers: Which Teams Are the Most Interested In Matthew Boyd?
By Tyler Kotila
The 2019 MLB trade deadline is fast approaching, and the Detroit Tigers have been shopping left-hander Matthew Boyd around the league in hopes to move him. The biggest question is: Where will Matthew Boyd be traded?
Matthew Boyd is arguably having the best year of his career for the Detroit Tigers who are in the midst of a rebuild. With the Tigers season being painful to watch, Boyd has offered at least a glimpse of what winning is like or at least good pitching that is. The Tigers have been actively shopping Boyd as the trade deadline approaches, and it sure seems like there are plenty of teams interested in him being that he is a left-handed pitcher with good numbers on a rebuilding team.
Expanding on that, Boyd has managed a 6-6 record which doesn’t mean much, but his primary stat line features a 3.87 ERA, a 1.12 WHIP, 11.9 K/9 rating, and 142 punch-outs through 107 innings pitched for the Tigers in 2019. On the more advanced side of things, courtesy of Statcast data, Boyd ranked in the top ten percent of the league in K% and BB% which has shown his improvement in pitch selection and command of said pitches. Boyd has been able to capitalize and make this a “breakout” season for him, even if he is on a rebuilding team who is struggling to win ballgames.
Besides his on the field attraction from teams, Boyd is under team control until the conclusion of the 2022 season where he becomes a free agent in 2023. Essentially, whoever acquires Boyd would be able to keep him around for a few years, or flip him quickly to recuperate players or picks expended when trading for him from the Tigers. With all of this information laid out, what are the top three destinations for Matt Boyd as the deadline draws near, and why?
