Detroit Tigers: Which Teams Are the Most Interested In Matthew Boyd?
By Tyler Kotila
Destination #3: Houston Astros
With the Detroit Tigers still tasting the blood of Houston Astros prospect Kyle Tucker from the Verlander trade, now is as good a time as any to make another run at him. The Astros have been “tracking” Boyd for whatever that’s worth, and the Tigers want Tucker to be the missing offensive piece of the organization’s rebuild puzzle.
Currently, the Astros are letting former Tigers ace, Justin Verlander power their rotation with the help of Gerrit Cole, Framber Valdez, Wade Miley, and Brad Peacock as supporting staff. This rotation is far from the rotation the Astros had heading into the 2017 World Series when they defeated the Dodgers.
Acquiring Boyd means the Astros add another arm, a lefty, and a player who can remain under team control while the team continues to capitalize on their window of opportunity. The only issue that could hold back the Astros from a deal with the Tigers is their willingness to move Tucker, and the Tigers want for him and him only. It was rumored that Avila would only pursue a trade with the Astros, providing Tucker is part of the package, and Astros GM Jeff Luhnow said that would not be likely.
The teams mentioned above are merely three of the many organizations who could be the landing spot for Boyd as the deadline approaches. Besides the Braves, Dodgers, and Astros multiple other teams have reached out to the Detroit Tigers or state they are actively looking into acquiring Boyd. The list of teams besides the three from above includes the Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, San Diego Padres, and Tampa Bay Rays.
