Predicting the Detroit Lions will only win three games is ludicrous
By Bob Heyrman
Predicting the Detroit Lions only to win three games this season is flat out laughable; It’s absurd, absolutely ludicrous! It once again proves the team from the motor city receives absolutely no national media love or respect–none!
Last season the Detroit Lions won an underwhelming six football games. How can you suggest that in an offseason of adding a player like Trey Flowers you would simply win half the amount of games as last season? Flowers is a fantastic defensive end; in fact, he was widely considered the NFL’s top free agent this spring. How many times have the Lions been able to land the leagues most coveted free agent? It’s a sign that things are starting to turn around in Detroit and it’s time the rest of the country is put on notice.
I’m not saying the Detroit Lions are going to win the Super Bowl this season. I’m not entirely convinced that they are a shoo-in to be a playoff team. I can say with complete confidence; the Detroit Lions will win more than three football games.
The NFC North division is shaping up to be if not the most competitive division in football at least one of them. As the season opener approaches similar to the AFC South, NFC South (besides the Bucs), AFC North and maybe the NFC East every team in the division truly believes they can win their division.
For whatever reason sports writer Nate Davis who writes for USA today decided that the Detroit Lions would only win three games this season. He claims two West Coast road trips early on in the season will be taxing. He exclaims the Lions will be hard-pressed to build on Matt Patricia’s rookie season as an NFL head coach where he won six games because the Lions are scheduled to play four of their eight home games against 2018 playoff teams. He also mentions that count doesn’t include a date with Green Bay and Minnesota.
Ok, ok, I get it. The Detroit Lions have a tough 2019 schedule, but with the teams’ offseason additions, I expect the Lions to finally be the team that starts to surprise folks. Trey Flowers is the main course, but the Detroit Lions also added plenty of premier appetizers to fill out their menu. The team added tight-end Jesse James and drafted T.J Hockenson.
Both TE’s are inline blockers that will surly help excel the run game. Both TE’s also become tremendous mid-range pass catchers. They are both large targets that Matthew Stafford will often utilize, especially in the RedZone. They will provide a miss-match for the Lions offense. The Lions also added sure-handed Danny Amendola, Jermaine Kearse & running back C.J Anderson to complement the second-year lead back Kerryon Johnson.
It’s a defense that will have Damon Harrison anchoring the defensive line for a complete season. Darius Slay locking down one side of the field plus the addition of slot-corner Justin Coleman. Plus maybe a potential breakout season from others, perhaps Da’Shawn Hand, shouldn’t limit the Detroit Lions to merely three wins. Earlier I mentioned Flowers being the leagues’ top available free agent, well Justin Coleman was arguably the best available corner. Needless to say, it was a tremendous offseason for the Detroit Lions.
The Lions finally rid themselves of the predictable offensive playcalling of Jim Bob Cooter. They hired Pete Carroll’s offspring, Darrell Bevell. Bevell will eventually bring the stability and much-needed balance the offense desperately requires. The new ball controlled offense will not only help Stafford remain in rhythm and comfortable, but it will also allow the defense to have a more extended rest than they’ve had in years.
The Detroit Lions will have their work cut out for them, but I can see a situation where the team splits wins wit each of their division rivals. They potentially could sneak a pair away from Minnesota (or) Green Bay if they have an excellent couple of days regularly ruffling the feathers of both Aaron Rodgers & Kirk Cousins.
The Detroit Lions play the Arizona Cardinals, New York Giants, Oakland Raiders, Washington Redskins, Dallas Cowboys, Tampa Bay Bucs & Denver Broncos plus the divisional games they may split. Yet, Nate has them winning a total of three games? Stop it. Of course, I didn’t mention the Chiefs, Eagles & Chargers as I expect those to be losses. Expect the Detroit Lions to win somewhere between seven & ten games in 2019.
