Detroit Tigers: Trading for Gleyber Torres makes a ton of sense
By Bob Heyrman
The Detroit Tigers own the worst starting pitching throughout all of Major League Baseball. The combined team starters era comes in at a whopping 7.30 prior to Matt Boyd’s start yesterday. Although the team has an elevated era, they have a chip to trade with a potential suitor.
The New York Yankees starting rotation on paper is pretty solid, but they’ve combined for the second-worst starters era in all of baseball just behind the Detroit Tigers. The days of Roger Clemons, Andy Pettite, David Cone, David Wells & even Mike Mussina are long gone.
In New York’s defense, they’ve been without one of the leagues better starters due to injury, Luis Severino. Over the last two seasons, Severino pitched he has a record of 33-14. Over that span, he’s recorded an era of 3.19 while striking out 450 batters in 384.2 innings of work. Severino has been sidelined with a shoulder injury along with a Grade 2 lat strain for all of 2019. The right-handed ace was only expected to miss the first couple months of the season, after a couple of setbacks it appears Luis’ entire season could be in question.
The Detroit Tigers who had spoken with the New York Yankees in the past regarding Matt Boyd may have to revisit those conversations. It appeared the Tigers were interested in receiving young star second baseman Gleyber Torres. Rumors also swirled earlier in the year that the Tigers were also interested in starter Domingo German.
