The New York Yankees currently seek starting pitching, why would they move German who has a 12-2 record on the season with a 4.03 era?  German is 26-years old, and many in New York wouldn’t consider Boyd for German straight up as an upgrade.  A current Yankees staff of German, James Paxton, J.A Happ, Masahiro Tanaka (just gave up 12 earned runs to Boston in 3.1 innings) and recently injured 39-year old C.C Sabathia.

The Yankees are amid a historic pitching blunder.  Over the last 31.1 combined innings of work by their starters they’ve given up 51 earned runs. Insane!  With C.C heading to the injured list, it may pursue general manager Brian Cashman to make a slash.  The Toronto Blue Jays dealt starter Marcus Stroman to the Mets.

Other than Madison Bumgarner or maybe John Means, Matt Boyd should be the most sought after left-hander on the market.  The Giants have been hot lately possibly taking Madison off the market and become buyers themselves. The New York Mets have kicked around the idea of moving right-handed ace Noah Syndergaard but they just added Stroman so it appears they won’t be sellers plus would they move him to their cross-town rivals?  If Torres is the centerpiece, they could be very intrigued.

If the Yankees are willing to part ways with their star in the making Torres who’s stashing a .362/.510/.871 line that includes 20 home runs, 55 RBI’s while hitting .294 Bumgarner or Syndergaard become the front runners in my mind. Torres is also under team control until 2024.

Adding Matt Boyd the Yankees could enter the postseason with a potential rotation of;

  1. Luis Severino
  2. James Paxton
  3. Masahiro Tanaka
  4. Matt Boyd
  5. Domingo German

This would allow J.A Happ to be an insurance policy if an injury occurs.  He’s struggling to keep the ball inside the ballpark this season.  C.C Sabathia could be an opener or maybe a lefty/lefty matchup option for the Yankees.  The 39-year old is a good teammate and surely wouldn’t balk at the suggestion of moving to the bullpen.

I feel for Detroit to get involved they will have to up the ante on Boyd by throwing in closer Shane Greene or maybe even Nick Castellanos. Dellin Betances is on the 60-day injury list, plus history shows the Yankees are willing to stockpile closers leading up to the playoffs allowing them to close games down from the sixth inning on if need be. Greene remains a valid option.
