Detroit Tigers: Taking A Look Back On Al Avila’s Trades From The Past
By Tyler Kotila
Watching J.D. Martinez depart might be the second hardest loss the Detroit Tigers have suffered in the recent past next to the departure of Verlander as mentioned before.
On July 18th, 2017 the Detroit Tigers sent J.D. Martinez to Arizona for Sergio Alcantara, Jose King, and Dawel Lugo. This trade was the second-best return for Al Avila, and it has not even reached its peak yet just like the returns from the Verlander trade. Lugo has yet to get to the big leagues but let’s save him for last.

Infield prospect Sergio Alcantara has created some buzz with his minor league accolades but nothing of the extraordinary. Alcantara has spent his time with the Double-A Erie Seawolves team that has treated him to a .236/.338/.291 slash line. Alcantara has plenty of developing to do before he reaches the big league but is one of the few promising positional players the Tigers have in their farm system.
Trading for King is a real investment; he is not someone who was a part of the deal as a major, well-known prospect. It’s 2019, and he’s still in short-season A-ball for the Tigers. King is only twenty years old as of now and is someone who does not have a lot of buzz surrounding him, and the Tigers hope to make something out of nothing here. King is a top thirty prospect for us, but the buzz surrounding someone like Lugo or Cameron is much more prevalent and worthy of conversation, he’s someone to revisit later in his development.
The prized addition from this trade was the acquisition of Lugo who has been tearing it up on his track to get called up by the Tigers big league club. Lugo did spend some time with the Detroit Tigers already this season when Candelario was sent down to get out of a slump he was having. Lugo is now working to get back to the big league club and earn his spot with the team.
All-in-all Avila has made some questionable decisions and putting together just three trades with outstanding returns was impossible, and settling for those discussed was the closest it comes. Just a reminder to all Detroit Tigers fans as well… Avila was extended beyond this season, so it’s not over yet.
