Detroit Tigers: A Look Ahead Towards Next Years Possible Rentals
By Tyler Kotila
Corey Dickerson was the perfect rental for the Pittsburgh Pirates who helped his cause by hitting two home runs the day before the 2019 deadline and eventually being dealt with the Philadelphia Phillies.
As mentioned above, Corey Dickerson was dealt this year at the trade deadline to the Phillies who were trying to bulk up their roster with depth to continue their run at the postseason berth in a division where the Atlanta Braves lead, and the New York Mets are quickly gaining. Dickerson is a left-handed hitting outfielder who provides a sneaky power element to a team that could use it.
Dickerson has played in forty-seven games this year with a .313/.369/.560 slash line with a little bit of pop in his bat and driving in twenty-eight runs. He is making $8.5 million this season for the Pirates/Phillies which means the Tigers would most likely be able to get him for close to the same price. Age should not be a worry for the Tigers since he will be entering his thirty-one-year-old season next year, still having time left.
If all were to go well, the Detroit Tigers could sign him and deploy him as an outfielder and designated hitter. Hopefully, he can hit well and show some surprising power and then be dealt a the deadline. Being an outfielder means he would join JaCoby Jones, Christin Stewart, Victor Reyes, and now Travis Demeritte in the outfield.
Being a little on the “pricey” side when it comes to a rental, there’s a risk/reward scenario here and coming off a season where the Tigers did that exact thing with Matt Moore; there’s no reason not to try it again. The stage of the rebuild that the Tigers are at right now only means that bringing on Dickerson for a one-year deal would not be such a bad thing.
