Left-hander Gio Gonzalez is more than a viable option; in fact, he would be a much better option than Hellickson is for the Tigers.

Gio Gonzalez is the perfect arm for the Detroit Tigers next season simply because he’s still a good pitcher who is stuck with contending teams and overshadowed by other pitchers. Gonzalez started the season off with the New York Yankees, who he eventually elected free agency after not being called up to the big league staff.
After his stint with the Yankees, Gonzalez joined the Milwaukee Brewers where he is currently playing. In nine starts with the Brewers, he has a 2-1 record with 3.35 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and a forty punch outs through forty-five and two-thirds innings of work. Gonzalez has produced a lot of no-decisions, but with a reasonable ERA and WHIP, he has been great in 2019, which is all the more reason to bring him onto the staff in 2020.
Gonzalez is a left-handed arm that the Detroit Tigers can utilize just like Hellickson as someone who will eat innings for the team and then hopefully be tradeable at the deadline. Gonzalez may offer a sweeter return from a contending team if the Tigers can snatch him up and then move him at the deadline.
Free Agency is still a few months away, but these are some of the guys the Detroit Tigers should keep an eye on for the remainder of the 2019 season into the offseason when they make their additions. Hopefully, Avila can make the right decisions and bring in the best players for the team to benefit, whether it be from the season or the trade deadline.
