Detroit Tigers: Forecasting The Best Prospects At Each Position
By Tyler Kotila
Another MLB Pipeline prospect, Matt Manning comes in at number twenty-seven on the Top 100 List. Manning is another pitcher the Tigers are hoping will be a part of their rotation in the future.
With his current development, playing for Double-A Erie, there’s a chance he could reach the big leagues during the 2020 season. The twenty-one-year-old right-hander has posted an 11-4 record through twenty-two starts while managing a 2.47 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, and 137 strikeouts through 124 innings pitched.
During his 2019 campaign, he has been a little overshadowed with guys like Mize leading the pack. Manning has still found ways to be an exciting prospect who is dominant on the mound. Manning’s future looks bright based on his statistics, but looking more into his frame and pitching mentality, there is, even more to get excited about.
Manning is a big body, 6’6” sitting in the mid to upper 90s for velocity. With his big frame and ability to ramp up the velocity, he has been impressive in his minor league career and could be a mid-rotation starter at the minimum. The remarkable part about Manning’s large stature is his athleticism and ability to cover plays off the mound.
His strength in terms of pitch type comes from his fastball and power curve. He throws a change-up as well that allows him to have a third pitch at his disposal. But it’s a pitch that needs to be further developed to be a real asset to the repertoire. If all goes well, Manning will be an excellent addition to the Detroit Tigers rotation when he reaches the big leagues.
