Detroit Tigers: Forecasting The Best Prospects At Each Position
By Tyler Kotila
Just recently, Tarik Skubal worked his way into the MLB Pipeline Top 100 list, snagging that 100th spot making him the third Tigers pitching prospect on the list. Talking about, being overshadowed, Skubal has been quietly putting up great numbers amid a pitching staff where he is surrounded by Mize, Manning, and even Alex Faedo.
Tarik Skubal is someone who has seemingly flown under the radar as a real asset to the Farm system. He’s been notable but does not have nearly as much buzz surrounding him as Mize, Manning, or even Faedo. Skubal is a big left-hander that is not afraid to attack guys in the box and get outs quickly. In 2019, Skubal has spent his time with the Double-A Erie squad after being promoted from the High-A Lakeland team.
In 2019, pitching for the Double-A Erie squad, Skubal has managed a 1-1 record through six starts while posting a 1.86 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, and sixty punch outs through twenty-nine innings pitched. Skubal uses his fastball to overpower hitters early in counts which allows him to get quick outs but also vulnerable to giving up hits early in the count. Skubal does lack a little bit in the control category, but the Tigers are expecting this to be fixed as he continues to develop in the minors.
Another strength of Skubal is his composure on the mound. He is not one to lose his composure even with a lack of control which will bode well for development. Staying healthy has not been an issue since college where he underwent Tommy John Surgery but has since been able to remain healthy in pro ball. The Detroit Tigers have a valuable prospect in Skubal. He can impact the rotation if he continues to have the same success he is showing in the minor leagues.
