The twenty-one-year-old Perez has been out this season with an injury but has been able to pitch in two starts this season for the Detroit Tigers. I believe that Perez does have a high ceiling if he can stay healthy. There was a lot of excitement about him when he was acquired, and I bought into it. It sure seems like there’s something there, he can be dominant, but there is nothing for sure dealing with an arm issue like shoulder tendonitis, which should always be taken with caution.
In the two games that Perez did throw in this season, he has thrown two outings accumulating seven and two-thirds innings allowing two runs across that with six punch outs. There is not much to analyze this year, obviously, but the scouting information on him is what excites people.
Control is something that Perez is very good with, having four pitches that he can throw for a strike when he is healthy makes him a dominant pitcher. His command will continue with him, providing that he stays healthy, which will also affect his mechanics which are currently smooth. Perez could also see a rise in velocity as he matures and grows more. But being able to command pitches is his strength which is beneficial for someone who does not have an overpowering 98 mph fastball.
The success of Perez is going to be dependent on his ability to stay healthy. If he cannot stay healthy, then this valuation/prediction will be wrong. As mentioned in the intro, someone like Joey Wentz could catapult himself into this position on the “All-Prospects Team” with a good showing since being acquired and a strong finish.
The way it stands, Perez is going to get his chance to show what he can do for the Detroit Tigers and whether he will be a part of the Tigers future.
