Mark Dantonio finally made the switch that fans have been begging for the past five or so years. It just wasn’t precisely the switch everyone thought as Dantonio just played musical chairs with his whole offensive staff. Switching Dave Warner from OC to QB coach and Brad Salem from QB coach to OC.
The offensive coordinator position in East Lansing over the years has taken a lot of scrutiny for its archaic formations and outright confusing play calling. Following last season’s pitiful display of creativity and forward-thinking coming from former offensive coordinator Dave Warner, his understudy Brad Salem gets his try at modifying the Dantonio inspired offense.
So what should we expect different from Salem? Salem last called plays in 2009 as head coach of division two Augustana University. Then his preferred was 11 personal out of the shotgun (11 personal = 1 RB 1 TE) and tried to spread the defense out while still running the ball. While I’m not expecting a total scrap and replacement of the playbook, I would expect some new packages. But, the play calling is what’s key to making this offense work.
Mark Dantonio described Salem as an “innovative, creative mind” when he promoted him in January. I hope Dantonio will let that mind be initiate creativity without being held back when it means the most, on Saturday’s.
