Detroit Lions find a few bright spots in ugly loss to Cleveland Browns
By Bob Heyrman
Eric Lee played exceptionally well last night for the Lions on defense. Lee regularly popped on the screen, making timely tackles. Lee created pressure on Garrett Gilbert notching himself a sack. He also got his hand up and deflected a couple of pass attempts. I expect Lee played himself into a roster spot. He may be one of the last players cut by the Lions but immediately brought back if Austin Bryant is placed on IR to start the season.
P.J Johnson has continued to develop inside for the Lions as the preseason has trecked on. He, along with Mitchell Loewen, played very well last night. They each made a handful of tackles. Mike Ford proved he deserves to be on this roster as a backup corner. He was lining up inside and out as a corner. Matt Patricia also lined Ford up as a safety. His versatility will surely land himself on a roster elsewhere if the Lions decide not to keep him. With how thin the Lions are at corner after Darius Slay and Justin Coleman, it is in the teams best interest to keep Mike Ford.
Rookie corner Amani Oruwariye left the game with an apparent ankle injury. Something that could also make the Mike Ford decision a bit easier. It’s pretty clear that Melvin will be starting opposite Slay this season with Oruwariye the first reserve in. Both Jamar Summers & Johnathan Alston recorded interceptions last night but I feel Ford played better than both.
It was an ugly 20-16 loss to the Cleveland Browns. Remember it was preseason game four. Honestly, it couldn’t end fast enough. Now the real season begins, let’s get ready for week one!
