It’s early September, and Mitch Marner has still not come to terms of a contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs and GM Kyle Dubas, which is not good for the Maple Leafs. The Detroit Red Wings need to be smart and make sure that they learn from Marner’s holdout when the time comes next offseason.

Coming into the second week of September, there are still twenty-two players who are unsigned as restricted free agents. The Detroit Red Wings may be in a similar situation next summer.

Some of the biggest names to remain unsigned restricted free agents (RFA) are Mitch Marner, Mikko Rantanen, Brayden Point, Matthew Tkachuk, and Patrik Laine. Perhaps the biggest of these names is Marner who has been in the news for quite some time with his ongoing battle between the Maple Leafs and Marner’s camp about his contract.

Marner is coming off of a season where he scored twenty-six goals, tallied sixty-eight assists for a total of ninety-four points overall eighty-two games last season for the Leafs. The Leafs are now on the verge of seeing one of their superstar forwards (alongside Auston Matthews and William Nylander) begin the season in the Switzerland playing. The threat to go to Switzerland has been perceived as a ploy by Marner’s agent Darren Ferris to get the Maple Leafs to pay up and give Marner the money.

As it stands, Marner is looking to net $11 million as his Average Annual Value (AAV) over whatever length it would end up being. There has not been a lot of momentum between the two sides, Marner is looking to get paid, and Dubas has not given in to Ferris and Marner’s demands. This situation is not over, and the end does not seem to be near, and the Red Wings need to look at this and learn, quickly. If Yzerman does not act fast, the Red Wings could be in a similar spot as the Maple Leafs currently are.

GM Steve Yzerman is going to be put into a similar situation next season with some different parameters and two players not just one player like Marner. Next season the Red Wings will have seven RFA’s that more prominent as a part of the Detroit Red Wings roster according to CapFriendly.

The two names that could produce a potential holdout situation are Andreas Athanasiou and Anthony Mantha. With RFA’s waiting longer than ever to sign, making sure they get the most money. Offer sheets are becoming more prevalent. These two players could cause a stir next offseason.
